Walsh Group have worked with Ballymore Properties on the redevelopment of the Old Spitalfields Market for a number of years.
The work carried out has encompassed a series of “island bars and restaurants” along with the reorganisation of drainage and the perimeter buildings.
The island developments create a village atmosphere and these buildings and were constructed on rafts supported in fill material with the construction. Their construction was of timber and steel, all to a very high architectural design and finish.
The design of the islands also featured a number of high level bridges connecting these islands and long span stairs. All of which were designed for public access taking into account the very stringent vibration and human sensitivity requirements.
Ballymore also commissioned Walsh Associates to assist them on the work which they were carrying out with English Heritage on the pavilion buildings. These have through neglect in the past, suffered decay with the advanced corrosion of early structural steel.
Walsh Associates worked closely with English Heritage and agreed remedial works to allow the restoration of these retail and commercial units to full modern day use.
Throughout the redevelopment, Walsh Associates were also called upon to work with English Heritage and agree roof modifications and the insertion of sculptures, wrought iron gate work, all of which was architect led and agreed with English Heritage as the work proceeded.
